Did you know that the longest day of the year will be this Saturday, June 21—the Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere. However, in Solvang, we’ll be getting the party started early this Wednesday, June 18 during Solvang Third Wednesday’s special Midsommer Musik events full of music, food, fun and culminating with a traditional mid-summer’s eve Danish fire-ring ceremony from 9pm-Midnight in front of the Solvang Brewing Company at 1547 Mission Drive. Sponsored by the Solvang Chamber of Commerce, there will be FREE music from Noon to Midnight all around town—from blues, country, folk and rock & roll, plus the always popular Farmers Market from 2-6:30 p.m. and the Wine & Beer Walk. From 5:00-7:30 p.m, you’ll want to be at Solvang Park (Mission Drive & First Street) where can picnic while enjoying the day’s free main concert featuring The Mark Roberts Band. Did you know that Solvang has had live, open-air professional theater performances every summer since 1974? Forty years ago, an incredible group of Solvang community leaders envisioned an outdoor theater for live drama, musicals, comedy and concerts. It was an astounding outpouring of civic initiative, fund-raising and physical labor that created the 700-seat Solvang Festival Theater–built in only 58 days at 420 Second Street in the heart of downtown. A totally unique-to-the-theater-world partnership was formed with PCPA (Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts); the only resident professional theatre company on California’s Central Coast in Santa Maria. PCPA Theaterfest presents amazing, world-class productions right here in Solvang from June through September. Starting this week (Thursday, 6/12/14) come enjoy the comedy farce Noises Off! then bop during the 1950’s musical Forever Plaid; experience Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic Oklahoma! and finish off the season with the historical drama The San Patricios. I absolutely savor spending an evening under the stars enthralled with live acting pros on stage. Hope to see you at PCPA Theaterfest this summer!
