For a limited time only, you can experience Oklahoma in Solvang—the musical that is! Opening this Friday, August 1, 2014 at the wondrous outdoor Solvang Festival Theater (420 Second Street), get your tickets now for the PCPA Theaterfest performance of this classic show running through Sunday, August 24, 2014. Originally staged on Broadway in 1943, this play was Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first and most innovative collaboration and originally staged on Broadway in 1943. It portrays a timeless love story (farm girl and cowboy) set in the Oklahoma Territory in 1906.
If you’re like me, you’ll be humming “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” and the title track “Oklahoma!” long after you’ve left your seat! I think there’s something magical about seeing professional theater productions in Solvang every summer. I highly recommend you pack a picnic from a local deli or take-out from one of our restaurants; then enjoy in the newly revamped theater courtyard before the show (gates open at 7:00 p.m.) You can buy glasses of local wines or famous Snickerdoodle cookies and coffee from the snack bar–then sit back and enjoy your evening with stars in the sky and on the stage! http://www.pcpa.org/plays/plays/oklahoma.html
Can you believe it’s been 10 years since the Oscar-winning movie Sideways premiered? It’s time to celebrate with the first-ever Sideways in Solvang Merlot Taste-Off! Remember, Sideways was filmed on location in Solvang and throughout the Santa Ynez Valley and stars Paul Giamatti (Miles) Thomas Haden Church (Jack), Virginia Madsen (Maya) and Sandra Oh (Stephanie) in a comedy-drama of two middle-aged men and the women they meet on a weeklong wine tasting adventure here. Now, you’re invited to enjoy the Merlot Taste-Off! event sponsored by the Solvang Conference & Visitors Bureau on Saturday, September 13, 2014, from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in the garden courtyard of the Solvang Festival Theater, 420 Second Street downtown.
Area wineries (including Baehner Fournier, Buttonwood, Carivintas, Core, Dascomb, Happy Canyon Vineyard, J. Ludlow, Lions Peak, Lucas & Lewellen, Point Concepcion, Sagebrush Annies, Sevtap and Sunstone Wines) will be pouring samples of Merlot—the varietal made infamous in the movie—accompanied by gourmet appetizers from local restaurants. Who can forget the character Miles in Sideways who declared, “If anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving. I am NOT drinking any (expletive) Merlot!” So taste some Merlot for yourself and feel great about it since proceeds from the Merlot Taste-Off! benefit the non-for-profit Solvang Festival Theater. Tickets are only $65 before 9/1/14 or $75 at the door (if available). Get yours now at http://www.solvangusa.com/sideways/
